iris is a small independent service, maintained by one person, and free. Everything below follows from that.
What you get
An account, a handle, a public page, and QR codes whose targets you can change whenever you like. No payment, no plan, no quota beyond the limits needed to keep the machine healthy.
What you do not get
- No uptime guarantee. One machine, one home internet connection. Power cuts, upgrades and mistakes all take it offline, and when it is offline your codes do not resolve.
- No warranty of any kind. The service is provided as-is. If a code stops working at an inconvenient moment, the remedy is sympathy.
- No off-site backup. Data lives on mirrored drives with local snapshots. That survives a drive failure. It does not survive a fire.
Print accordingly. A code on a sticker or a business card is a fine bet. A code on something expensive, permanent, or handed to two hundred people is a conversation to have first.
Your content
Your links, targets, images and page text are yours. You are responsible for them, and you confirm you have the right to publish what you publish. Do not use iris to point at malware, phishing pages, or anything illegal where the server lives. Those get removed and the account with them, without notice.
Because the codes are public and permanent, the operator can remove or repoint a code that is being used to harm someone. That power exists and it will be used sparingly.
Slugs are permanent
The eight-character slug in a code's URL is written once and never changed or reissued, not even after you delete your account. That permanence is the entire product; it is also a constraint on what can be undone.
Ending it
You can stop using iris at any time. To have the account and its data removed, ask. Whoever gave you the invite code knows how to reach the operator. There is no self-serve delete button yet and one person reads the request, so it may take a few days. See Privacy for what is stored and therefore what gets deleted.
The operator can close an account for abuse, or shut the whole service down. If iris is ever retired deliberately, there will be warning and an export.
Changes
These terms can change. The date at the top is the only changelog. If a change matters, it will be obvious in the app before it is obvious here.
